Diabetes is the name give to the symptom of high blood sugar that is high enough to cause damage to the body. It is also a short name for the illnesses that cause the symptom, most commonly Diabetes Type 2 and Diabetes Type 1 although there are others.
Another more technical term is Diabetes Mellitus. Mel is the Latin for sweetness and it used because when the blood sugar level is too high the kidneys put blood glucose into the urine and and that makes the urine sweet.
Mel is also Latin for honey so some say that the word mellitus is used because the urine smells of honey. I have had high blood sugar many times and trust me honey, it smells of pee.
In some warm countries with plenty of ants running around a simple clue for diagnosis was to get a patient to give a urine sample which was poured onto the gound. If ants swarmed around to carry it away then it must be sweet. That could be how the illness was detected in the first place.
What blood sugar levels signify diabetes?
