Topic: Sick Day Rules.
We are told about the DAFNE sick day rules. It would be wrong to list details here. If you need to know then you need to attend the DANFE course. Here is an outline.
Identify whether you have a minor or major illness. You can determine that with your BG levels and by measuring your ketone levels with Ketostix urine reagent strips.
If your illness is minor your insulin resistance will increase so you will need more insulin.
A major illness is one that caused keytones to appear in your urine. In the absence of illness high blood glucose can cause ketones but when you are ill you can have keytones without high blood glucose. Ketoacidosis (KTA) is a serious problem which needs tackling.
The discussion explains the importance of trying to get keytones under control with the right dose of insulin and technique for doing so.
Topic: Checking Food Recipes for Carb Content
Some foods cooked at home or when visiting friends and family can present a challenge which can be overcome by looking at the ingredients of the recipe. We take part in an exercise of looking at recipes to determine which ingredients contain carbs that we need to count and we estimate the CPs in a meal portion.
Topic: Annual Review & Diabetic Complications
We are told the importance of attending an annual review and the various tests that are made to monitor or prevent complications. The list of vulnerable organs and tissues is not uplifting but then, that’s diabetes! The key is to keep good control to prevent those complications.
We take a look at some drugs which help prevent complications.
Topic: Nutrition 4.
The challenges when eating out. Beneficial foods that contain useful substances like natural statins and Omega 3. Healthy eating: more fibre fruit & veg and less red meat etc. The usual suspects, but not too serious.
